Happy Birthday Raphael! Though he only lived until he was 37 years old, he was a prolific architect and painter during the High Renaissance in Italy. Perhaps his most recognizable painting is “The School of Athens” from 1509/1510. He also led one of the largest workshops of that time which included about fifty pupils and assistants.

While Lithuania was under the control of Russia, authorities enacted a press ban on all publications written in the Lithuanian language using the Latin alphabet in order to assimilate the Lithuanians into Russian culture. The Lithuanians were not interested in adopting these changes so tens of thousands of books were illegally brought to the region from 1964 to 1904. March 16th is celebrated because it is the birthday of Jurgis Bielinis, the “King of the Book Smugglers,” who helped organize about half the books brought into Lithuania during the ban. Without the resistance, the Lithuanian language and literature might not still exist today.
